About Us
Search For Your Rights needs your help to protect civil rights in Western Australia. The freedom to associate; freedom from arbitrary police attention; freedom of speech; and freedom of movement can all too easily be removed from our lives. The ineffectual pursuit of being ‘tough on crime’ is all too often used to mask a government’s inability to properly deal with social problems, and in the process takes rights away from the people the government is meant to serve.
SFYR was originally founded to stop the Criminal Investigation Amendment Bill 2009, which sought to introduce ‘stop and search measures’ which would remove the need for police to reasonable suspect an individual of committing a crime before searching them. This bill was rejected by the Legislative Council, after eleven months of investigation found that the bill has no justification or benefit.
The Barnett Government failed in its attempt to make ‘stop and search’ a part of Western Australian criminal law, largely thanks to the community’s opposition to the bill.
However, laws like this keep on coming. Search For Your Rights has since opposed the introduction of Prohibited Behaviour Orders and the CHOGM Special Regulations
Right now, Search For Your Rights is fighting against the Criminal Organisation Control Bill 2011; a piece of legislation that seeks to remove our right to associate with one another.
Far from being ‘anti-bikie’, the Anti-Association legislation can apply to any community group, and have a huge potential for abuse.
