I was pulled over in a country town last week after locking a gate, returning to my vehicle, indicating and pulling out of the drive, then putting my seat belt on. The officer said "I didn't see your belt on when you were in the car at the gate.", then said "Besides that, we didn't see you trying to put it on although it seems to be now.." They breathalyzed me, then fined me $500.00 for 'Failure to wear a seat belt', and said I was lucky that I wasn't fined for not changing my address. I also lost 4 points.

I read with concern your paper on OUR RIGHTS. Mmm my daughter in law, whom is a non smoker, drinker and, personally, anti drugs, was followed, then stopped on the outskirts of a small country town bordering our home town of Pingelly recently with the 'doing a license check' excuse that is frequently used by öfficers in this part of wa. But to her dismay and i might say anguish, she was actually questioned by these 2 ??, i'm sorry, i dont actually know what to call them anymore, about how many times a certain young person visits their home, what is she doing in Brookton at this time of night, what drugs does my third son 'delve into' (he doesnt do drugs, alcohol? lots of it!), where is my third son, is he still working away, what drugs does she have in her car, when did she last have a smoke, when was her last drink....the list goes on! My daughter in law is 20 yr old! my 4th son and herself have a 18mth old daughter, she was on the road by herself coming back home from a day in Perth. What can be done apart from letters so she can try to rid herself of feeling totally violated, with their search of her car, handbag, purse and mobile phone, whilst 1 of them kept her at the back of the car. She gave them permission to search, to shut them the hell up with their accusations and get them out of her face, knowing full well they wouldnt find anything on an innocent person. These sorts of animals donot belong in our force to violate the rights of decent people driving home from a day in the city. Maybe they need to come up against someone who has the balls to stand up to them instead of being the intimidating toe rags they all seem to be in this neck of the woods? Thank you for allowing me to vent my frustration. Any words of advice ?

I fear it has happened already :(

Earlier this year, our house was broken into by the police. They left us a grotty business card apologising and that they were looking for a violent offender. They didn't even board up the window and it was left like that for 10 hours until I got home.

My boyfriend and a friend from Germany went on a roadtrip to Exmouth 2 weeks ago....in a matter of 3 days they were stopped 3 times by the police. All 3 times he was breathlysed and drug tested and on one of those occassions they searched the vehicle.

Australia has the second highest recidivisam rate in the world 'second' only behind America. For years we have followed the American way of law enforcement and 'punishment'. Nowhere enough emphasis has been placed on rehabilitation.
I did 2 years jail in Holland the 4th lowest residivication rate in the world, there was rarely more than 1 or 2 petty criminals in a unit of 24 crims. Most of the inmates were in for serious offences.
Drug addicts are given treatment for their health issues instead of punished for minor crimes commited to feed addiction, the prisons prime level of punishment is incaceration, after that it is all about rehabilitation.
It was 41/2 months before I saw anything that looked like a fight on the Football field, a bit of push me shove you. The other crims had stoped the fight before the Guards had 'walked' 3 metres. In a Victorian prison a game of football ment a fight, 1 game per week at least 1 fight. In Holland 4 games of Football per week and 4 1/2 Months for a minor scuffle.
Why do we follow a deteriating system, the worst in the world, isn't it common sence to follow the better systems the ones with possitive results? Silly me, common sence is not allowed in the vocabulary of Australian Politetions.
Let us hope that Australia decides to follow this new way of thinking that seems to be starting in America. Mind you if the normal flow of things takes place it will be at least 10 years before they wake up to the change.
I do wonder where America looked to come up with the idea? Could they have looked to Denmark, Sweden, Finland and The Netherlands?

Why would you want to tackle crime any other way than putting resources into those communities to solve the social and economic problems which cause large numbers of those people to end up in teh criminal justice system?

Re : Papalia article on Texas progam "Justice Reinvestment"

Rally today was also a triumph of reason notwithstanding the astonishing views of the Police Minister Rob Johnson on why these laws would be appropriate.
